My Tech Related Page

So I think technology is super cool! I'm invested mainly in retro/older, consoles and machines (if you couldn't tell by the old-school activity of designing your own website as a teen). So here I'm going to write about different pieces of tech that I own and how I use them, or just pieces I'm interested in. So here is the list of older technology that I use on a regular basis and how!:

Pocket-able tech:

iPhone 5s (2013)

iPod Nano 2nd Generation (2006) iPod Touch 4th Generation (2010)
My iPhone 5s: where it all started (pretty much). December 2024, I got it as a gift from someone who has now upgraded. It was the first piece of "old tech" I have specifically sought out and I've been using it since! I downgraded from my iPhone 12 Pro, which I gave away a month or so a go, so I'm all in now, haha. Back when I first started using it I started bloging the experience on tumblr, so I've copied the contents of those posts onto THIS PAGE (currently in progress), if your interested in the iPhone 5s experience in 2025. It is crazy to look back on how this all began with me wanting a phone with a headphone jack... and now here we are today. I can not believe how much tech I have been able to accumulate and play with since then haha.
My first ever iPod! I got this back in May (25) as an early birthday present. It only has 4GB so it has a limited selection of music but it was a great way to get started, especially when I had a much smaller music collection. Back then I actually had quite a bit of trouble getting music onto it, so I spent most of my day explaining to literally everyone how and why certain things weren't working and how I was going to fix it. You'll see that I mention this further down in the 'Dell OptiPlex' column, but I have issues with the disk drive only reading certain disks. The ones that I bought brand new from HMV all worked, but I had started to get stuff second hand, very few of which it was able to read. For a while I was also carrying my portable CD player around with me for the CDs I couldn't import. Luckily I now have a laptop that can read all of my CDs, so its not a problem and I can get all the albums that I want on it.
I got my iPod touch 4th generation during the summer this year, and its awesome! I got it for £20, and it's got 8GB which is handy as my ipod nano was running out of space. This is the device that has also allowed me to experience iOS 6 on a budget. The music app has such a cool design, and I love flicking through the album art. I have tried to jailbreak it, and technically succeeded, but Cydia isn't installed, so I don't have any apps aside from the default ones. I have synced my calander to it though so when I need to check my college timetable, I can just use my iPod, which is handy. For me I use it all the time because I am obsessed with music but I can understand why some might not see the point. You can also what YouTube on it if you type in the video/channel link directly, and I've even got some podcasts on there. I have also covered the back of it in apple stickers (as in the fruit), because I thought it was funny.

Portable Gaming

My DS Lites (2006)

Unfortunatley I haven't quite saved up the money for a 3DS yet, so in the meantime, I'm working with DS lites. I have 2: the metalic pink model and the pastel pink model. The metalic one is my orginal DS from childhood! Only one game (horse life) survived, but I have now bought a more substantial collection. As you probably know, the DS lite models are also backwards compatible with the Game Boy Advance cartridges, so far I've only got my hands on one (Mario Kart Super Circuit), but one day I'll buy the pokemon GBA games. By far my favourite game so far is Animal Crossing Wild World, which isn't exactly suprising (it is a classic after all), but it got me back into nintendo and handheld gaming. There is an awful lot that I do not know about these consoles and games, so you won't get a nerdy ramble, it's just a fun pastime of mine.

Gaming Consoles

Laptops and my Desktop:

My 2012 MacBook Pro

My Lenovo ThinkPad R400

My Desktop PC: Dell OptiPlex 3010 (2012)

I got this for my 16th birthday, and it is the device I use the most on the daily (yes, even more than my phone!). As someone who collects CDs (and has a resonable DVD collection as well) a disk drive is a MUST for me. I am lucky enough to have one of the final products apple released with one which meets all my music and general computing needs! You may be wondering how it is I am able to use such an old device, without compatibility issues. This is because the previous owner used open-core legacy patcher to install the latest version of macOS, this combined with its high specs (for the time) intel core-i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, means it runs like a charm, albeit rather hot! Don't get me wrong, you can tell that its not the latest, but it is more than usable. Am I slightly disappointed that I couldn't experience an older version of macOS (this is my first mac), yes, however I think this is better in the long run and means I can use it for all of my modern day college needs, without constantly being told I need to update my browser. One day OS X Mountain Lion...

Manufactured between 2008 and 2010, this was actually my first ever laptop! And I still have it and it works! (In fact I'm currently using it to type this out!) I got it for my 6th birthday in 2015, after asking for a "cupyootr" as I wrote in my diary at the time. It still has all the games that I used to play when I was little, SuperTuxKart being my favourite. Since then it's been running linux mint (thank god, I do not think it would've survived this long on windows vista), and can just about function. I've still got an old version of firefox on it, which is unfortunatley rather limiting, but it has neocities runnning and I can do quick searches. YouTube, or and video services work on here, and the disk drive is pretty "rubber-ducked" so it doesn't make for a good media player. I also do not want to log into various productivity/sharing and messaging tools on here, due to the lack of security. But hey: the aesthetics are such a vibe, and once you move past the missing keys, it's super fun to type on. (I pulled off the tab, and caps lock key when I was little haha). I have only just started incorporating it back into my life, and getting the jist of linux from a windows and mac user, and am by no means an expert in this field, I'm sure that there is plenty I could add and tweak to improve its capabilities, but for now, this is good.

This is the one I use the least, but it got me through lockdown, and one updated graphics card later, many Minecraft gaming sessions. It has served it's purpose but I can't really see myself going back to it anytime soon. The disk drive was somewhat tempremental, unable to read about half of my cds at the time, which was rather frustrating, but it got a limited selection of music on my iPod when I needed it. I don't have an awful lot to say about this one, it ran windows 10, it's what I started to code my own game on... but thats about it. Now it's just collecting dust until I decide I need windows (for old itunes) and can't use my (2017) laptop.
